The Different Types of Retirement Communities: Which One is Right for You?

Today's question is, what are the different types of retirement communities available?

Hi, I'm Dawn D'Amico, I'm a licensed realtor in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and I am a certified senior real estate specialist. Today I'm going to talk to you about the different types of retirement communities available and how to choose which one might be right for you.

There are many different types of retirement communities and each with its own unique set of amenities and services. Here's a brief overview of some of the most common types of retirement communities:

The first is an independent living community. These communities are designed for seniors who are able to live independently, but may want access to some amenities and services, such as transportation, housekeeping, and dining.

Then we have assisted living communities. These communities provide more assistance than independent living communities, such as help with bathing, dressing, and medication management.

There are also Continuing Care Retirement Communities, also known as CCRCs. These communities offer a variety of living options, including independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care. CCRCs typically require a large upfront entrance fee, but they can provide peace of mind knowing that your care needs will be met as you age.

I recently had the pleasure of working with a client who was looking for a retirement community for himself and his wife. The missus was an active senior who wanted to enjoy her retirement years to the fullest, but unfortunately, her husband's health was declining a bit faster. She wanted to be sure she had the help she would need to take care of him and peace of mind that she would have her needs met when the time came as well. They also wanted to be in a community where they could make new friends and participate in activities.

After an in depth discussion, I showed them a few different retirement communities in the area. And they ultimately decided on a continuing care retirement community that offered a variety of independent living options, as well as access to assisted living and skilled nursing care if they ever need it.

They are now happily settled into their new home at the CCRC. They love the fact that they can enjoy all the amenities of the community, such as the pool, the fitness center, and the golf course without any of the upkeep. They also appreciate the peace of mind knowing that their cares will be met as they age.

If you are thinking about retirement, I encourage you to start your research early and visit different types of retirement communities to see which one is the best fit for you. It is never too early to do some pre-planning.
